I had to read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein for some of my students the other day, and it was crazy how much more the story hit me now as an adult than it did as a kid.
I was trying to figure out why, so I brought it up with my Asian American friend here who /gets it/.
Then we figured it out.
It’s because we POC are the giving tree and the “little boy” represents white people.
And they take and take from us.
And then when we have nothing left to give,
They chop us down,
And then sit on us.
And then we’re supposed to smile because we just love “giving” to the little boy so much.
And that’s how it ends.
We have nothing, they’re sitting on us, and we are being told that we should be happy that we “gave away” so much.
And there you have The Giving Tree-POC edition.
